El Dorado couple surrenders for federal prison in pot case

An El Dorado County medicinal marijuana physician and her attorney husband surrendered to U.S. authorities this afternoon as medical marijuana advocates blasted the government for sending the couple to federal prison for five years.

Dozens of medical marijuana advocates rallied on the steps of the U.S. Courthouse in Sacramento for Dr. Marion P. “Mollie” Fry, a breast cancer survivor who ran a medical clinic in the rural town of Cool, and attorney husband Dale Schafer. The couple were convicted in 2008 for conspiring to produce and distribute marijuana.

“Free God’s medicine,” Fry shouted. The crowd yelled back, “We love you Mollie!”

Schafer told supporters they were medical marijuana pioneers who were persecuted by the government because of her medical pot practice and the fact “I grew marijuana for my wife and myself and for a handful of sick people.”

Prosecutors portrayed them as opportunistic conspirators who played to sympathy over Fry’s illness as they built a million dollar enterprise as Fry issued medical marijuana recommendations and Schafer providing pot to her patients.
