THC skin patch could be available by end of 2011

Soon patients will be able to receive medication through their skin by way of an epidermal skin patch, much like nicotine patches used to help people quit smokingSoon patients will be able to receive medication through their skin by way of an epidermal skin patch, much like nicotine patches used to help people quit smoking. These patches however will be used to control the release of THC into the patient’s system as an alternative to smoking marijuana, instead of being used to help people try to quit the substance.

The patch is set to be available to dispensaries by the end of 2011 under the trade name Tetracan, However the company developing the marijuana patch, Medical marijuana Delivery Systems (MMDS), has yet to release a prototype or any specific details about the product.

In the 1990s Walter Cristobal, a prominent member of the Santa Ana Pueblo Tribe of New Mexico, started developing a topical solution that could deliver the benefits of marijuana through the skin. In 2000, he was awarded a U.S. patent for a transcutaneous (through-the-skin) therapeutic formulation, which comprises of marijuana and a carrier substance.

Since then, Cristobal has partnered with Chester Soliz and Jim Alekson to form MDDS and take his patent to market. The company is “devoted to the advancement, research and development of marijuana delivery modalities”. In addition to the medical marijuana patch, MMDS hopes to develop other new medical marijuana delivery systems such as creams, gels and oils.

There is some skepticism towards the company’s ability to launch such a product by the end of the year. “We’re in the process of perfecting it,” Alekson explains.

Tertacan has an advantage over many other types of non-marijuana medicinal creams because the patch is not required to participate in years of FDA testing and will only require a <a title=”Medical marijuana card” href=”http://azmarijuana.com/doctors” target=”_blank”>medical marijuana card</a> for purchase.
